Flatastrophe is the B-plot of the 19th episode of Odd Squad.
Olive and Otto get back to headquarters, where Ms. O shows them that a hot dog cart has been flattened. They suspect the Shapeshifter, but Ms. O shows them that it hasn’t changed shape, it unfolded from a cube into six squares in a cross pattern. Olive suspects that a new villain has arrived, someone who hates cubes, so they head to Polly Graph’s lemonade stand, which has many ice cubes.
At the lemonade stand, a new villain is flattening the ice cubes. He identifies himself as Fladam, and explains that he hates cubes and tells everyone a story that he hurt his foot on one as a kid. He then tries to flatten Polly‘s cubical chairs, but Olive jumps in the way and gets flattened herself. Otto carries Olive back to the lab, where Oscar can’t find any way to fix her. They then realize that because Olive has only 2 dimensions, she can easily become invisible.
Ms. O has a cube with her faces on it, and Otto uses it to attract Fladam’s attention. Olive and Otto pursue Fladam through the park, but Olive can’t move well enough to catch him. Otto folds Olive into a paper airplane and throws her, and she reaches Fladam and takes his glasses. Without them, he’s powerless. Olive and the hot dog cart are repaired, and Fladam receives therapy to get over his cube fear.
- 3D objects vs. 2D objects, cubes and squares
- Despite getting treatment for his fear of cubes, Fladam is seen later on in the series still trying to make cubes into squares.
